Is Intermittent Fasting Safe for Dogs?? Expert Insights about obesity in dogs.

Updated: Nov 13

People are always trying out new diet trends to lose weight, from calorie counting to the keto diet. One popular method nowadays is intermittent fasting. Although studies have shown that this approach is safe and effective for weight loss in humans, pet owners may question whether it is suitable for their obese dogs.

Obesity in dogs can increase the risk of health problems such as heart disease and cancer. As a result, pet owners may consider intermittent fasting as a suitable approach to maintain their dogs' optimal weight. However, even minor changes in diet can significantly impact the health of dogs. These impacts may vary based on factors like age, level of activity, and pre-existing health issues. Therefore, it is essential to consult a veterinarian before altering your dog's diet.

As dogs became domesticated, their digestive systems adjusted to living alongside humans. By becoming attuned to verbal commands and working with humans, dogs secured more reliable food sources and experienced fewer periods of hunger. Unlike wild wolves, dogs have developed the ability to digest certain carbohydrates. Dr. Jerry Klein, DVM, Chief Veterinary Officer for the American Kennel Club, explains that dogs' gut microbiota have evolved to process a starch-rich diet as a result of their changing environment.

Intermittent Fasting for Dogs

Humans practice intermittent fasting in different ways, such as fasting at specific times of the day or on particular days of the week. Advocates of intermittent fasting for dogs claim that it may enhance a dog's immune system, cognitive function, digestive health, and overall lifespan. Nevertheless, Dr. Klein warns that these assertions rely mostly on anecdotal evidence and are not supported by scientific research.

A study was carried out by researchers to investigate how intermittent fasting affects the immune system of healthy dogs. Due to the vulnerability of hospitalized dogs to inadequate nutrition and weakened immunity, the study specifically focused on healthy dogs. The researchers divided 10 healthy dogs randomly into three feeding schedules, and those in the intermittent fasting group displayed a tendency to lose more weight, along with lower levels of blood glucose and insulin. Although the study did not reveal any immune-suppressing effects of fasting, the limited sample size did not encompass dogs with health problems.

In addition, the Dog Aging Project has investigated the correlation between the frequency of dog feeding and their health results. Since 2019, scientists have gathered information on more than 24,000 pet dogs to analyze the impact of environmental, genetic, and lifestyle elements on aging. The research encompasses dogs of various ages, sizes, and breeds.

According to the study findings, dogs who are fed once daily are less likely to experience a range of health issues, including gastrointestinal problems, cognitive decline, dental issues, orthopedic conditions, liver or pancreatic ailments, and kidney or urinary disorders. It is essential to recognize that the reduction in health problems cannot be solely attributed to the feeding frequency, as other factors may also play a role. Further research is needed to establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship between feeding dogs once a day and enhancing their overall health. In conclusion, while once-daily feeding shows promise in improving dogs' well-being, additional investigation is required to confirm its benefits.

When Should I Fast My Obese Dog?

It is essential to consult your veterinarian and follow their guidance before deciding to fast your dog. In cases where your dog is suffering from gastrointestinal problems like vomiting or diarrhea, your vet might recommend a temporary fasting regimen. Dr. Klein advises that during the fasting period, typically lasting from 12 to 24 hours, your dog should only drink water.

After your dog's health improves, you can slowly start giving them a small portion of bland food such as plain boiled white rice or pumpkin. This will allow their digestive system to rest and reduce inflammation.

It is crucial to ensure that dogs have constant access to fresh water, no matter how they are fed. Dr. Klein stresses the importance of preventing dehydration, as it can lead to serious health issues and even death, underscoring the necessity of keeping your dog properly hydrated.

When to Avoid Fasting Your Dog

Dr. Klein recommends that intermittent fasting is suitable for healthy, adult dogs who do not fall into certain categories, including puppies under 18 months old, small dogs, pregnant or nursing dogs, and dogs with preexisting medical conditions.

Prior to commencing intermittent fasting for your dog, it is crucial to consult with a veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary nutritionist to ascertain if it is the most suitable method. Fasting is advised against for puppies under 18 months old, especially large breeds that have rapid growth, very small dogs or Toy Group breeds, and dogs with existing medical conditions like diabetes requiring insulin treatment.

Dr. Klein recommends following your veterinarian's guidelines and the instructions on the dog food label to provide your dog with a well-rounded and balanced diet. It is crucial to focus on proper daily feeding, limiting low-calorie treats, avoiding table scraps, and ensuring regular exercise, instead of resorting to fasting. It is essential to understand that dogs have unique metabolisms and nutritional needs that differ from those of humans and other animals. Therefore, implementing human dietary methods like intermittent fasting in dogs can pose risks.
