What is an American Corgi you ask?
The American Corgi is an exciting new developing breed!!!
Registration at this time is with the Continental Kennel Club. The American Corgi was created by crossing the Pembroke Welsh Corgi with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Since then through selective breeding, focus has been put on carrying forward only the best traits of each breed as well as putting that beautiful merle coloring onto a more physically Pembroke style dog.
The majority of the American Corgis I use in my breeding program here at Hat Creek Corgis are 100% Pembroke via DNA or parentage. Genetically most entirely Pembroke, but
they do still carry some of the wonderful Cardigan characteristics.
My American Corgis have never met a stranger. Their outgoing, comical and fun-loving like a Pembroke, but a bit more laid back. Generally easier to train and slightly less "bossy" than most Pembrokes tend to be and a little less vocal than most Cardigans tend to be.
Probably one of the neatest things about the the American Corgi litters is they come in all colors under the rainbow accepted by both Pembroke and Cardigan standards. However the "American Corgi" in general is referred to as the merle colored pembroke/cardigan cross. Hat Creek Corgis specializes in high quality American Corgis of all colors including but not limited to blue merle corgis, red merle corgis, bluie dilute merle corgis, red bluie dilute merle corgis, fluffy merles corgis, Brindle merle corgis, red and white corgis , sable corgis, black headed tri corgis, red headed tri corgis, Fawn corgis and more. You name it we have it. The American Corgi comes in such a variety of colors its exciting to see each litter.
Are American Corgis Healthier? Although every dog’s health is unique to themselves, over the years, many people have discovered that mixed breed dogs are often healthier than purebred dogs. The reason being that purebred dogs have a limited gene pool, genetic disorders that arise continue from generation to generation. Mixed breed dogs have a much more diverse genetic pool, so even if one dog has a health issue, chances are it will disappear even within the next generation.
Do American Corgis Live Longer?
On average, it has been discovered that many mixed breed dog’s life expectancies are longer than that of a purebred dog. However, any dog’s lifespan including the American Corgi's can be affected by a long list of items, including overall health, their play, food, exercise routine, living and environmental situations etc.
Caring for an American Corgi
When it comes to American Corgis, each one is unique (both in personality and appearance). Although some dogs do require certain diets or exercise routines tailored to them specifically, most American Corgis are easy to care for and train—therefore making them a great choice for first-time dog parents.
